How much water should I drink a day?

We had a chat with our Nephrologist and transplant specialist, Dr Jatinder Kohli, about how much water should one drink a day.

“There is no clear evidence of benefit from drinking increased amounts of water and under certain circumstances there may even be harm of drinking excessive amounts of water leading to Hyponatremia.

As Dr. Heinz Valtin summarized this almost two decades back, “The universal advice that has made guzzling water as national pastime is more urban myth than medical dogma and appears to lack scientific proof.”

There is also no clear evidence of lack of benefit except for those with history of recurrent kidney stones or perhaps those with polycystic kidney disease.

To summarize, drink to your thirst!

Talk to your Nephrologist in case you have history of recurrent kidney stones or polycystic kidney disease.
