Rheumatology

Actemra

Actemra is a medication commonly used in rheumatology to treat certain inflammatory conditions. It belongs to a class of drugs known as interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitors, which block the action of IL-6, a protein involved in the inflammatory response.

This medication is prescribed for individuals who have moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation and pain. Actemra can also treat conditions such as giant cell arteritis (GCA), a blood vessel inflammation, and systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA), a form of arthritis that affects children.

Actemra can be administered as an injection under the skin or as an intravenous infusion. When injected under the skin, it can be used every week or every other week and is usually given in the skin of the abdomen or the thighs. When given as an infusion, it is given once every four weeks.

Benefits of Actemra

One of the main benefits of Actemra is its ability to reduce the signs and symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions. By blocking the action of IL-6, this medication helps decrease inflammation in the joints, reducing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Actemra is effective in improving physical function and quality of life for individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. It can also help to prevent joint damage and slow down the progression of the disease. In addition, Actemra is well-tolerated by most patients, with few serious side effects reported.

Actemra is a valuable medication in rheumatology due to its ability to reduce inflammation and improve symptoms in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. It offers several benefits, including improved physical function and quality of life. Before starting this medication, be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with one of our SMC Physician doctors.
