Vestibular Rehabilitation

Regain balance and reduce dizziness through expert vestibular care.

SMC Physical Therapy offers vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) to help patients manage and overcome symptoms like dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, and blurred vision, all common effects of vestibular dysfunction. Whether caused by benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, concussion, or chronic imbalance, VRT can significantly improve your quality of life.

Common Conditions We Treat
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis
  • Post-concussion dizziness and imbalance
  • Age-related balance issues or deconditioning
  • Motion sensitivity and chronic dizziness
  • Postural instability related to neurological conditions
What to Expect at SMC

VRT begins with a comprehensive evaluation by one of our trained physical therapists. This includes a full review of your medical and symptom history, balance and gait analysis, eye movement testing, positional tests to diagnose BPPV, and functional mobility screenings.

Based on the findings, we develop a customized plan focused on retraining your balance systems and helping your brain better process sensory signals.

Treatment techniques may include:

  • Canalith repositioning maneuvers (e.g., Epley, Semont) for BPPV
  • Gaze stabilization exercises to improve control of eye movements and reduce blurred vision
  • Balance retraining to improve steadiness and coordination during walking or daily activities
  • Habituation exercises that gradually reduce motion sensitivity
  • Fall prevention education and safety strategies
Who Can Benefit from Vestibular Therapy?

Vestibular rehabilitation isn’t just for those with diagnosed inner ear disorders—it can also benefit anyone experiencing unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness, or visual motion sensitivity. Many patients come to us after struggling for months with symptoms that haven’t resolved on their own or haven’t responded to medication.

You may benefit from VRT if you:

  • Feel dizzy or off-balance when turning your head, bending over, or getting out of bed
  • Experience unsteadiness while walking, especially in crowds or open spaces
  • Feel disoriented in busy visual environments like grocery stores or malls
  • Notice blurred vision with movement or trouble focusing when shifting your gaze
  • Have lingering dizziness or imbalance following a concussion or viral infection

Even mild symptoms can significantly affect your ability to work, drive, exercise, or enjoy your daily life. At SMC, we help you take control of those symptoms with expert guidance, targeted exercises, and supportive care.

Our Approach to Long-Term Progress

At SMC Physical Therapy, we’re committed to supporting your long-term success. As part of your recovery plan, we provide education, home exercises, and strategies to help you manage flare-ups and maintain stability in daily life.

We also recognize that vestibular conditions can be mentally and emotionally challenging. Feelings of frustration, fatigue, and anxiety are common in patients dealing with chronic dizziness. That’s why we take a holistic approach, working at a pace that respects your comfort while steadily guiding you toward progress.

If your symptoms change or return, we’re here for you with ongoing support and reevaluations to adjust your care as needed.
